Jun 22, 2017  Step 27: This will take you to the Wii U menu. From there, boot-up Super Smash Bros. Step 28: The game will hang on the screen, but this is normal. It is dumping the files to your computer. This process also takes several hours. So be patient. Step 29: Once the process is done, the game will boot-up. This does not mean it is fully done. As we all know, Smash 4 just got its likely final update, which only contains Amiibo information for Corrin, Cloud, and Bayonetta. Even though this update doesn't change gameplay at all, it is required to go online. However, if you use the browser exploit to play Smash 4 with mods and haven't converted to Haxchi, there are two ways to keep your mods and still update Smash!

Both methods require you block Nintendo updates by setting your DNS to 168.235.092.108 and 081.004.127.020.

The first is the simpler, quicker, free method.

  1. Download the Homebrew Launcher, this version of SDCafiine, and NNU-Patcher.

  2. Drag the wiiu folder from each zip file onto your Wii U's SD card, merge and overwrite if prompted. Put the SD back in the Wii U afterwards.

  3. Launch the Homebrew Launcher through the Loadiine.ovh gateway (the browser exploit).

  4. Run NNU-Patcher. The system should kick you back to the home menu.

  5. Wait about five minutes, then click Smash. It should update like normal, and let you in. Since 1.1.7 doesn't change anything except the Amiibo files, any existing Smash 4 modpack for 1.1.6 will work just fine without any alterations.

  6. Note that you can NNU-Patcher to update any installed game or access the eShop for purchasing/redownloading purposes.

  7. Congratulations, you now have Smash at version 1.1.7 with the Wii U at System Menu version 5.5.1! Now you just have to live in fear of accidentally hooking your Wii U up to a hotspot that doesn't have custom DNS and losing all your homebrew. If you don't want to live with that fear, the second method is for you.

Wii U How To Load Mods On Smash Bros

The second, more permanent method is called Haxchi. It uses an exploit in the DS Virtual Console's emulator. You can use homebrew through the browser exploit to install a modified title into certain DS Virtual Console games, and convert the VC game into a booter for the Homebrew Launcher. Once Haxchi is installed, you can even update to 5.5.2 and continue to use your mods and anything else you might want to use Homebrew for! Haxchi has the added benefits of being available offline and a 100% HBL boot rate. Haxchi also includes a signature patching feature, allowing it to function as a lightweight 'custom firmware'. The only downside to Haxchi is that's it's not free. The cheapest compatible DS Virtual Console game costs about seven dollars.

There is also an advanced version of this method called Coldboot Haxchi. Like regular Haxchi, this also installs a modified file into a DS Virtual Console game (so it still requires a purchase), but it also configures your Wii U to boot directly into that game instead of the System Menu. This means that if your Coldboot Haxchi install becomes corrupted or you mess up somehow while installing it, it will effectively brick your system. Due to this risk, I do not recommend installing Coldboot Haxchi.

If you already own a DS Virtual Console game from the list in step 4, and you don't mind permanently losing the ability to actually play that game, you can skip steps 3 and 4.

  1. If you aren't on 5.5.2 already from your Wii U updating itself, unplug any USB storage devices from the system, then go grab the files for http://wiiu.guide/get-startednow, put them on an SD card in the indicated locations. You can skip the Coldboot Haxchi zip file. Plug that SD card into the Wii U.

  2. Disable your router if you can. If you can't disable your Wi-Fi, go quickly into the system settings immediately after turning on the system. Put in the update-blocking DNS from page one of the guide if you don't already have it in place. If you 'blocked updates' a long time ago, you might be using an older DNS. Change them to the new DNS servers on http://wiiu.guide/get-started. Reconnect your system to the Internet.

  3. Go to http://loadiine.ovh in the Wii U's browser and select the Homebrew Launcher. You'll need to visit the site twice because of how the kernel exploit works. Loadiine.ovh's success rate for launching the HBL is below 100%, so try again if it fails (your Wii U freezing). Once you're in the pretty, blue Homebrew Launcher menu, launch NNU-Patcher. This will give you access to the eShop without updating your system. Restarting your system after running NNU-Patcher will unpatch the NNU module, so you'll need to run it again if you restart.

  4. Purchase one of these DS Virtual Console games. Currently, Brain Age is the cheapest of these titles on the eShop ($6.99 USD). Make sure this installs to your Wii U's internal memory, not to your USB Hard Drive (this is why I said to unplug any in Step 1). You may have to restart the Wii U and re-launch NNU-Patcher to download the game after purchasing it. If it still doesn't install, try this advice.

  5. Follow the guide at https://wiiu.guide/haxchi to install Haxchi into your DS Virtual Console game. This step assumes you downloaded all the necessary files in Step 1. Do not continue to the Coldboot Haxchi page unless you are willing to accept the brick risk involved with installing Coldboot Haxchi.

  6. Assuming you didn't install Coldboot Haxchi, you can now launch the Homebrew Launcher just by holding the A button while choosing the big friendly Haxchi icon on your Home Menu, and from there you can launch SDCafiine to run your Smash mods. You can now plug your USB storage device back into the Wii U.

  7. It should now be safe to update your system to 5.5.2 if you want by switching back to auto-obtain DNS, but you can still play online from v5.5.1. The only thing you can't do on 5.5.1 is use the eShop (without using NNU-Patcher first). I recommend not updating if you can avoid it, because if you somehow mess up your Haxchi install you won't be able to fix it until a new browser kernel exploit comes out for 5.5.2. The Wii U hacking community isn't very active, so there's no guarantee they were sitting on an exploit for this situation like when the 3DS gets updated.

  8. As a bonus, clicking the Haxchi icon without holding A will give you a signature patched 'custom firmware' that allows you to do a lot more with your console, including breaking the region lock, installing your disc-based games to a USB drive, and controlling the system with a Playstation or Xbox controller. This mod, like every Wii U mod besides Coldboot Haxchi, is not permanent and requires running each time you start the system. Any games or titles installed remain installed though.

Also going to plug /r/3dshacks and http://3ds.guide. The 3DS is much more thoroughly 'pwned' than the Wii U and has a much more active homebrew ecosystem. Check it out if you want to play ROM hacks coughcough , back up and edit save files, stream video to your PC (New 3DS/New 2DS only), take screenshots, use the n3DS processor at full speed for better framerate in games, and much more!
