Be a Farmer First[edit]

Berries recently took a hard nerf but that doesn't mean farming isn't still one of the best ways to make money in the game.

Making sure you have a decent amount of money set aside to buy crops at the beginning of each season is very important. Planting as much as you can on Day 1, especially for crops that produce recurring crops such as Berries will give the best results down the line. Using fertilizer on these crops to increase your chances of producing high-quality produce is also a great idea.

Completing the Community Center Pantry Room Quests will unlock the Greenhouse which will let you plant crops, even in the winter.

This will put you in a good position to Process Your Crops all year round.

Mine and Fish In Your Free Time[edit]

Starting off, Mining and Fishing may not seem like profitable ventures. However, as your skills increase, the payoffs can begin to shoot up quite rapidly.

For mining, the payoffs will occur when you reach floors that have Iron Ore and Gold Ore. 5 pieces of ore becomes a bar, and bars can be sold for a hefty amount of cash. You will also find various precious gems, or even Diamond, making you even richer on those lucky days.

Fishing starts to pay off once you can reliably catch the fish. It sounds like a silly concept, but the first few levels of fishing can be tough due to the small range of the green bar to catch fish. Once your skill goes up, so too does the size of the bar, making fishing far easier. Spending a whole day fishing can net you multiple thousands of dollars, and potentially other rewards if you're lucky!

Process Your Crops[edit]

Simply selling the base products you obtain will be the main way you earn money. However, there are better ways to go about it. As you level up your skills, you unlock various new machines that can process your goods into higher quality stuff. Machines like the Keg, Preserves Jar or Mayonnaise Machine take your base produce, work on it for a couple days, then turn out something new.

This process can be time consuming, as you have to wait several days in some cases, but the end results are always worth it. 25G Egg can turn into 100G Mayonnaise. Your fruits and vegetables that sell for 50-100G can turn into Pickled and Jelly versions that sell for 200G or higher.

So, what's the best way to go about it then? It's too much to try and process all your crops, so we suggest aiming for about 25% of them. Sell the other 75% the normal way, and then take about 25% of it and set it aside for processing. This will allow you to make a quick buck off your base crops, but also get some higher end products later on. Of course, this number can be adjusted based on how committed to this you want to be, and how many resources you have in order to build the various machines you will need.

Set Your Priorities Right[edit]

One of the biggest keys to success in Stardew Valley is to set your priorities correctly. Wasting even one hour of time means you weren't making money during that hour.

Always start your day by doing your farm work. Afterwards, you should head off to the Mines to get some ore to sell, or go fishing to sell off what you catch.

Winter is a great season to catch up on your friendships and other non farming related activities, so don't feel bad if you're ignoring them during the more productive seasons. Raising animals is also something that can wait till later in the year. The upfront costs of having to buy the building, plus the animals is quite large, and will take away many thousands from your coffers. This is precious money that instead should be saved for more seeds. Once you are floating a comfortable amount of extra gold, somewhere over 10K, then you should consider investing in animals.

Upgrade Those Tools....Carefully![edit]

Upgrading your tools early is extremely important, otherwise you will be laboring in the fields for far longer than you want. The problem is, upgrading means you lose access to that tool for a couple days. This means, that in order to upgrade and continue farming, you need to plan ahead a few days.

The main ones that need upgrading are the Pickaxe, Hoe and Watering Can. Due to how fast the Hoe works, it's more of a luxury upgrade and not entirely necessary. However, getting the Pickaxe and Watering Can upgraded is very important as they greatly decrease the time needed to tend to your farm and mine ore.

The Pickaxe is the simpler of the two to upgrade. Anytime you don't have access to it, resort to fishing to make some income as you wait. Although not quite as profitable, it's still great, and if you get lucky, you might find some treasure to make up for it.

The Watering Can is tougher. You need it daily, so there are only a few times it's safe to upgrade it. One is at the end of a season. On day 27, you can send it in for upgrade because watering on Day 28 doesn't matter, since plants will die anyways. You then get the Watering Can back on Day 1 of the next season, so you can start planting new seeds. The other safe time to upgrade is when it's about to rain. Check your TV daily, and if it says tomorrow will bring rain then you are safe to upgrade today. Just make sure to water your plants first!
